stevfaith: Why Hurt Your Soul?
TEXT: Jeremiah 44:1-10
Key Verse: “Therefore now thus saith the Lord, the God of hosts, the God of Israel; Wherefore commit ye this great evil against your souls, to cut off from you man and woman, child and suckling, out of Judah, to leave you none to remain” (Jeremiah 44:7).
No one who is in his right senses will deliberately want to hurt himself. Anyone found doing this will actually be considered to be out of his mind or under the influence of drug or other forces. There is that natural instinct in man to want to always protect himself from any form of hurt.
Our text today reveals an important truth that we need to deeply consider. God, through Prophet Jeremiah rebuked the Jews in exile for their continuous sin and rebellion in spite of the devastation He brought upon Jerusalem. Their current travail in exile was due to their sins and yet they continued in them. God made them to realize that their being in Egypt will not hide them from divine judgment. He made them to know that their living in rebellion amounts to wickedness against their souls.
Sin is actually an act against one’s soul. Those who live in sin are actually harming themselves. When God therefore warns against sin, He is actually doing it out of the love He has for us. It is just like a caring parent lovingly warning his child against playing with objects that will cause him harm. When God warns you against sin, He is not asking you to do Him any special favour rather, He is the One doing you a favour. He knows the consequences of sin. He has determine to judge sin and no one who persists in it, ignoring His warning and spiting His love can escape the judgment. Now that you know, what will be your response? It is wise to heed God’s warning and respond to His love. This is the only way to get healing for our wounded souls and escape further sufferings. Don’t spend a minute longer in sin, get forgiveness now as you repent of your sin and turn in faith to the Lord Jesus.
THOUGHT FOR THE DAY: They that hate God love death.
